Getting dental implants is a multi-step treatment that necessitates trained experts. Although using implants to replace missing teeth is a significant help, you must still know what to expect before, during, and after the procedure. That way, you can avoid unnecessary worry and maintain confidence.
Initial Consultation and Treatment Planning
The first step in the dental implant process is an oral health and jawbone density evaluation. This helps to identify if you are a good fit for an implant. The next thing that will happen is that we will use 3D cone beam imaging to pre-plan and carefully place the implant. This is all done to achieve the best possible results and keep you, the patient, very comfortable.
The Surgical Implant Placement
To start the surgical part, the patient must receive anesthesia. This is necessary to ensure comfort and that the patient remains relaxed during the procedure. Afterward, the area will be numb. The surgeon uses a scalpel to make an incision into the gum. Then, a drill will be used to create a hole in the jawbone.
The hole must be the same size as or slightly smaller than the titanium post that will be inserted into it. After placing the post, the gum is sewn back up, and an X-ray is taken to confirm the correct position.
The Osseointegration Healing Period
Following the placement of your dental implant, it is crucial to give the bone enough time to heal and attach to the implant material. This process, called osseointegration, allows the implant to become a part of the jawbone and serve as a solid foundation for the artificial tooth that will eventually be attached to it.
The time for this to happen depends on various factors and can range from three to six months for most people. During this crucial healing time, we have to keep the spot where we put the implant very clean and free from food particles and bacteria.
The Final Permanent Restoration
When the process of osseointegration has been completed, you will need to return for the final steps, in which your custom-made dental crowns and bridges or implant dentures are securely attached to your dental implants.
These dental restorations are made to be as comfortable and functional as possible and are crafted using digital imaging and the skills of our techs to create forms with real authenticity.
Long-Term Care and Maintenance
Looking after your dental implants is surprisingly easy because, like your natural teeth, they require just a bit of routine maintenance. All you need to do is brush and floss your teeth as directed and come in for regular dental check-ups and cleanings. If you offer this relatively modest amount of care to your implants, they will provide you with outstanding service not for years but for your lifetime.
While the length and complexity of the implant process could be described as a downside, the fact that you are in the company of a team of professionals who are bent on seeing you achieve the most desirable outcome and who are just as interested in your comfort and peace of mind serves as a great upside. Understanding the benefits of implants can further highlight why this process is worth considering.
