Extraction Post-Operative Instructions
Home Care of Gauze
- Remove the gauze after 1 hour.
- If bleeding persists, place a new piece of gauze dampened with water over the extraction site and apply firm biting pressure for 20 minutes. Repeat as necessary.
- A damp tea bag can also be used to aid in clot formation.
Diet
- After waiting one hour, cold fluids such as milkshakes (use a spoon, not a straw) or ice cream are recommended.
- Stick to a soft, cool-temperature diet for the next 48 hours.
Swelling
- Swelling is a normal part of healing. Reduce swelling by applying an ice pack to the outside of your face near the surgical site for 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off. Continue for 4-5 hours.
- If swelling persists after 4-5 days, contact our office.
Mouth Rinses
- Avoid rinsing for the first 24 hours.
- After 24 hours, rinse gently with warm salt water (1 tsp. salt in 8 oz. warm water), especially after meals. This helps keep the area clean and promotes healing.
- Brush your teeth carefully, avoiding the surgical site.
Medications
- For discomfort, take Advil or Ibuprofen (400 mg every 4 hours) for the first 48 hours. If additional medication is needed, follow your prescription instructions.
Avoid:
- Heat applied to the face, as it may increase swelling.
- Rinsing, spitting, smoking, or using straws during the first 48 hours, as these activities can disrupt blood clot formation.
If you experience persistent bleeding, swelling, or pain, please contact our office immediately.
Instructions for Night Guard Care
Proper care of your night guard ensures its longevity and effectiveness:
- Soak your night guard in warm water for no more than 10 minutes.
- Use a soft toothbrush with regular toothpaste (no whitening toothpaste) to clean it, then rinse thoroughly.
Avoid:
- Dawn soap, Polident, Efferdent, hydrogen peroxide solutions, bleach-containing products, or mouthwash, as these can damage the night guard.
Instructions for Cleaning a Soft Reline
To maintain the integrity of your soft reline, follow these care guidelines:
- Do Not use abrasive toothbrushes or toothpaste on the lining.
- Best Way to Clean:
- Rinse the reline under cold water.
- Wipe it gently with a wet cotton pad.
