Following proper aftercare instructions is crucial after a tooth extraction to promote healing and prevent complications. If you’re curious about why extractions are sometimes necessary, check out our post on understanding the reasons for tooth extractions.
At Precision Dentistry of Olympia, we prioritize our patients’ well-being, and in this blog post, we’ll share essential tips for a smooth recovery.

Bleeding and Clot Formation
Immediately after the extraction, it’s normal to experience some bleeding from the extraction site. To facilitate clot formation and minimize bleeding, follow these steps:
- Bite down firmly on the gauze pad provided for 30-45 minutes after the extraction. Avoid disturbing the area with your tongue or fingers.
- Replace the gauze pad if it becomes saturated with blood.
- For the first 24 hours, avoid rinsing, spitting, or using a straw, as these actions can dislodge the clot and delay healing.
Pain Management
Some discomfort and swelling are expected after a tooth extraction. To manage pain and promote healing, follow these guidelines:
- Take over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, as directed by your dentist.
- Apply an ice pack or cold compress to the outside of your cheek near the extraction site for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off for the first 24-48 hours.
- Avoid strenuous activities for the first few days, as this can increase bleeding and swelling.
Oral Hygiene and Diet
Proper oral hygiene and a soft diet are essential during the recovery period:
- Gently brush and floss the surrounding teeth, taking care to avoid the extraction site.
- Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) 24 hours after the extraction to promote healing and keep the area clean.
- For the first few days, stick to a soft, nutritious diet, avoiding hot liquids, crunchy or hard foods, and anything that could become lodged in the extraction site.
Potential Complications
While rare, it’s essential to be aware of potential complications, understand how to recognize a dental emergency, and seek prompt attention if you experience any of the following:
- Severe or prolonged bleeding that doesn’t stop with applied pressure
- Excessive or worsening pain or swelling after the first few days
- Fever, chills, or other signs of infection
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing
